If encountering an Ubuntu system that won't boot, but can access via HDMI TTY switching

Step 1: Check current system information

  1. Check Ubuntu version: In TTY, run the following command: bash $ lsb_release -a No LSB modules are available. Distributor ID: Ubuntu Description: Ubuntu 22.04.5 LTS Release: 22.04 Codename: jammy

    This will display your Ubuntu distribution version and codename (e.g., Ubuntu 22.04.5 LTS).

  2. Check Jetson L4T version: Jetson L4T is NVIDIA's custom underlying driver and system software for Jetson platforms. Run the following command:

    bash $ cat /etc/nv_tegra_release

    R36 (release), REVISION: 4.3, GCID: 38968081, BOARD: generic, EABI: aarch64, DATE: Wed Jan 8 01:49:37 UTC 2025

    KERNEL_VARIANT: oot

TARGET_USERSPACE_LIB_DIR=nvidia
TARGET_USERSPACE_LIB_DIR_PATH=usr/lib/aarch64-linux-gnu/nvidia

This will display your L4T version information, which is crucial for determining compatible software packages.

  1. Check JetPack version (if installed):
    JetPack is a bundle containing L4T and various NVIDIA SDKs (such as CUDA, cuDNN). You can check it using the following command:
    bash sudo apt-cache show nvidia-jetpack | grep "Version"

Version: 6.2.1+b38
Version: 6.2+b77
Version: 6.1+b123

Step 2: Verify completeness of desktop environment dependencies

The most common cause for a graphical interface failing to start is a corrupted or incomplete meta-package for the desktop environment or its dependencies. Ubuntu's default desktop environment is GNOME, and the corresponding meta-package is typically ubuntu-desktop.

  1. Check the status of the ubuntu-desktop package:
    bash dpkg -l | grep ubuntu-desktop

If the software package is already installed, you will see a line of information starting with ii. If it is not installed or its status is abnormal, there may be a warning message.

  1. Check for corrupted dependencies: Run the apt dependency checker to identify any unsatisfied dependencies. bash sudo apt-get check

If this command produces any output, it indicates the presence of dependency issues. You can attempt to fix them using the following command: bash sudo apt-get -f install

  1. Try reinstalling the desktop environment: This is the most effective way to resolve dependency-related problems. It will reinstall all missing desktop components. bash sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install --reinstall ubuntu-desktop sudo systemctl status gdm3 sudo systemctl restart gdm3

The installation process may take some time. After completion, reboot your Jetson device: bash sudo reboot
